What's up?
| Do you love the snow, and want to get to know and enjoy it more, to expand your horizons? Or are you rather apprehensive of it, and want to become more confident? |
Is your dream to follow in the steps of Sir Ed and conquer high peaks? Or are your aims more modest, and you just want to learn how to travel safely when encountering snow on your tramping trips?
Do you want to brush up your existing snowcraft skills? Or are you starting from scratch, and want to learn an exciting new sport?
If you can identify with any of the above, then the ATC Snowcraft Course based at the club lodge at Whakapapa will fit the bill.
So read on all you budding alpinists......
|
Weekend 1 - Learn the basics of alpine travel and safety, utilising your ice axe and crampons.
Weekend 2 - Move on to steeper slopes and more advanced skills, including anchors and snow-shelters.
Weekend 3 - You have a choice. Either technical climbing skills and rope-work for those aspiring to greater challenges, or a scenario-based option if you're more interested in "alpine tramping", where you get to practise your new skills in simulated real-life situations. |
In addition to the above, there will be two theory nights in Auckland (before weekends 1 and 3), so that time in the snow down the mountain can be maximised. A field trip between weekends 2 and 3 is also planned.
Our instructors are all volunteers who are experienced in the mountains but may or may not hold recognised instructor qualifications. Instructor/Participant ratios are no more than 1:5 on non-technical terrain and 1:3 on technical terrain.
